What Is Bacon and Why Is It Popular?

Written by solarwind on November 23, 2009 – 12:07 am -

Bacon is thought as one of the tastiest foods in Western culture. There are numerous sites dedicated to this subject. There are even fan clubs. Astonishingly, there are actually Bacon shoes (these are not really made out of Bacon but are rather made to appear as if they have been - do a search if you do not trust my word).

This, perhaps astonishing popularity, makes us wonder. Who invented bacon? How to cook bacon? Can you microwave bacon? How to make bacon? Can we do this ourselves? Which are the best bacon recipes? Is Bacon Healthy? Why do people love it so much?

Fortunately, the internet is a great place to search for resources for such information. A quick query reveals that Bacon is merely cured meat that is made from certain parts of a pig. There are numerous types of bacon which come from different areas of the pig (its belly, its side, its loins, its shoulder and even its cheeks). Furthermore, there are lots of ways of making it: it can be boiled, baked, smoked, grilled, fried, used as a component in a salad and in numerous other methods. Indeed, bacon can most definitely be microwaved (i.e. using a microwave bacon cooker), and this is an action people can do on their own.

Because Bacon is made from pork (although in certain countries, non-pork based bacon-like foods are also referred to as bacon, which is in my humble opinion basically does not count), is actually not allowed to eat for followers of Judaism and Islam. Judaism treats pigs as ‘dirty’ or ‘tainted’ animals and as such, all meats made from them are not allowed.

I need to finish, my Spicy Bacon Pasta is waiting for me. I suggest you go and purchase some. You know you want to.
